Where you stand before booking
On its own the TIE grants nothing. It records a permission you already hold: a visa in your passport for a stay of over six months, or a favourable resolución (written decision) on an authorisation granted in Spain, by the Oficina de Extranjería on Calle Arzobispo José Delicado for example. Holding one of those, you can book the fingerprints. Married to a European? Your card for a European’s relative goes through its own form, the EX-19, before the police make it.
The fingerprint appointment
In the cita previa for Valladolid, choose the fingerprinting procedure for issuing a card (toma de huellas, expedición de tarjeta). policia.es puts TIE issue (“expedición TIE”) under the brigade on C/ Gerona s/n and, in the south of the province, under the Comisaría de Medina del Campo. There an officer goes through your papers, records your fingerprints and hands you a resguardo: keep this slip, which proves the card is in production.
Pay the 790-012 fee form first, and ask your town hall for a volante from the padrón: both go in the folder below.
- EX-17, completed, with your signature
- Passport showing the visa (original and photocopy)
- One recent colour photo in passport format
- Receipt for the 790-012 (bank stamp or online proof)
- The resolución, when your permit was granted in Spain
- Evidence of your address in the province, a padrón volante for instance
The second visit, for the card
A few weeks on, the card is ready. Picking it up is a step of its own, and some offices want a separate appointment for it. Take the resguardo and your passport, and look the card over at the counter: name, NIE, dates and type of residence should all be right before you go.
Renewing, replacing, travelling
Renewal is requested while the authorisation behind the card is still running; when it is granted, you book fingerprints again for the new card. A card that is lost or stolen is reported to the police, and a duplicate requested. To travel while either is pending, read our page on the autorización de regreso.
